Who is Isharani Baruah? All you need to know about India’s Akane Yamaguchi.

Isharani reached the semifinals of the Orleans Masters 2026.

Isharani Baruah is quietly becoming one of Indian badminton’s most exciting prospects. A relentless mover who idolises Akane Yamaguchi and is making her presence felt on the global circuit.

Born on 4 January 2004 in Dibrugarh, Assam, India, Isharani Baruah has steadily climbed the women’s singles rankings to reach a career-high World Ranking of 44 and an impressive World Tour Ranking of 20. Her recent run of results – a runner-up finish at the Odisha Masters, a semifinal at the Orléans Masters, and a quarterfinal at the Thailand Masters signals that she is ready to announce herself at the highest level.

India’s Akane Yamaguchi

The comparison to Akane Yamaguchi is one Isharani herself has invited. At the Uber Cup 2024, she spoke openly about her admiration for the Japanese legend: “Yamaguchi is my role model, I just love her game. She is also not tall but makes her opponents run around the court. I watch all her matches and try to play her strokes.”

It is a fitting parallel. Like Yamaguchi, Isharani does not rely on brute power but instead uses relentless movement, deception, and court coverage to wear down opponents, a style that has become her calling card on the circuit.

A Run of Impressive Results in Early 2026

Isharani’s recent tournament performances paint the picture of a player in fine form.

At the Orléans Masters, she defeated Amalie Schulz in the opening round before beating China’s Wen Yu Zhang in a hard-fought three-game battle (11–21, 21–17, 21–14). She then forced the retirement of compatriot Malvika Bansod in the quarterfinals before eventually falling to Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh in the semifinals, a creditable run against strong opposition.

At the Thailand Masters, she once again got the better of Malvika Bansod in the opening round, then defeated SUNG Shuo Yun in a tense three-game match before going down to WONG Ling Ching at the quarterfinal stage.

Her most significant recent result, however, came at the Odisha Masters 2025, where she reached the final with victories over Pornpicha Choeikeewong, Anmol Kharb, and Tanya Hemanth, only to fall to Unnati Hooda in the title match. Despite the defeat, the run underlined her ability to beat ranked players on a consistent basis.

Climbing the Rankings

Baruah’s current World Ranking of 44 and World Tour Ranking of 20 reflect a steady and sustained rise through the women’s singles landscape. Her ability to compete with and defeat higher-ranked opponents in back-to-back tournaments suggests her rankings will only continue to improve.

She has also built a solid BWF International record, with five titles and two runner-up finishes to her name, victories that have taken her across continents and sharpened her game against diverse playing styles.

The Road Ahead

At 22, Isharani Baruah is entering what should be the prime years of her career. With a playing style modelled on one of the sport’s all-time great movers, a rapidly improving ranking, and the temperament to handle big moments, she has all the ingredients to become a mainstay of the Indian women’s singles setup for years to come.

Indian badminton fans have found a new name to watch closely, and if Isharani Baruah has her way, she is just getting started.
